Description
A prosphora seal — the wooden stamp that presses the sign into the bread taken to church. The letters IC XC NIKA and a cross are carved into the face, arranged in fields as custom requires.
The stamp is pressed onto the rolled dough before baking, and the mark stays after it comes out of the oven. The carving is deep enough for the impression to read clearly even on risen dough.
Beech. The wood is dense and hard, so the edges of the letters stay sharp through years of use and do not round off from washing.
A seal is kept in the house and used a few times a year rather than daily. Wipe it clean and dry after each use, and do not leave it standing in water — the carved face is what has to be preserved.
