Description
The largest of the three mortars: 95 millimetres across, 135 tall, with a pestle to match. Sized for a whole batch of spice mix rather than a single pinch.
The extra width and depth mean the mortar can be worked with force — nuts, dried peppers, coarse salt — without anything leaving the bowl.
Beech, turned from solid wood. The wall thickness is what makes a large mortar usable: a thin bowl would split under the pounding this size is bought for.
A mortar this size is also used for making pastes — garlic with salt, herbs with oil — where the volume matters more than the fineness of the grind.
