Description

A wooden barrel tap, 250 millimetres long and 30 across. It is driven into the bung of a barrel and the liquid is drawn through it — the traditional way a barrel is tapped.

The taper is what seals it: the tap is knocked in until the wood grips, and the fit tightens further as the wood swells with the liquid.

Wood. It is used rather than metal because it gives nothing to the contents — no taste and no reaction with wine, brandy or vinegar.

A tap is fitted once and left. Taking it out and putting it back is what loosens the seat, so a barrel in use keeps its tap until it is emptied.
