Description
Forty centimetres in diameter — the board for a long table. One of these replaces three or four small platters, so the table is set once and not rearranged during the meal.
The surface is flat across the whole circle, which means the layout is free: sections of cheese, cured meat and fruit are arranged as needed rather than fitted into compartments.
Beech, glued up from several lengthwise staves. A solid panel of this diameter would warp badly — the wider the piece, the more it moves across the grain. The glued construction is what holds it flat.
At 40 centimetres the board is carried with both hands. It is set down once and stays, so it is worth putting it in the centre where everyone can reach.
