Description

A bowl for nuts with a wooden mallet, 230 millimetres across. The nuts are cracked on the bottom of the bowl itself, so the shell stays inside instead of flying across the table. A mallet of the same wood comes with it, shaped so the blow is short and controlled.

The bottom is flat and thick, to take the blow, and the 30 millimetre walls hold the shell. After use the bowl is simply emptied, and the kernels are separated from the shell in the bowl itself.

The panel is beech, glued up from several lengthwise staves — beech is hard and dense, so it takes the blows without denting. The mallet is beech too, from a single piece. The set is often bought for the winter months and as a gift.

Walnut shell is sharp and scratches, so look over the inside and wipe it afterwards; small pieces tend to stay against the wall.
