Description
A board of 400 × 200 millimetres cut to the shape of a cleaver — a wide blade with a handle. The outline is a butcher’s sign, and the board is used for serving cured meat and grilled dishes.
The handle is cut from the same panel, so it carries the board without a fitted joint. The wide end holds the food; the handle has an opening for hanging.
Beech, glued up from several lengthwise staves, 19 millimetres thick. At 20 centimetres wide a solid piece would warp, which on a shaped board would be visible at once.
Butcher’s shops and grill restaurants use these on the wall as much as on the table. The shape makes it clear what the place sells without a word of signage.
